ECOSYSTEM IMPACTS of OVERFISHING
Several shark populations around the globe are experiencing drastic population declines. We are investigating potential ecosystem consequences of these declines through a series of integrated field and laboratory studies.
GPS for SHARKS
Using custom designed satellite tags, we are investigating the movements of threatened shark species in the subtropical Atlantic.
GREAT WHITE PREDATION
Wintertime in False Bay, South Africa is known for its awe-inspiring white shark acrobatics during predatory attacks on juvenile Cape fur seals. This project investigates the physics, characteristics, patterns, and locations of these attacks.
SCAREDY FISH – EAT or HIDE
When fish move out into the open to feed, they are putting themselves at a higher risk for predation. This project will examine this tradeoff in mangrove and coral reef fishes.
WILD SHARK IMMUNOLOGY
In order for the immune status of wild sharks to be used in marine conservation, baseline data across species must be collected as an initial step.
SHARK ECOLOGICAL RISK ASSESSMENT
With the growing number of threatened shark species globally, how do we most effectively prioritize conservation efforts? This project aims to quantify and predict the vulnerability of threatened shark species.
TOXIC FOOD WEBS
As apex predators, sharks are particularly vulnerable to mercury contamination through bioaccumulation up the food chain. Investigating shark mercury content has implications for both ecosystem and human health.
TIGER SHARK PREGNANCY
Female tiger sharks spend well over a year in pregnancy before giving birth to her pups. Our scientists are working to understand where and when this critical cycle occurs, in order to create more effective protection for the species.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND SHARKS
How resilient are sharks to climate change, and how adaptive are communities and businesses that rely on them as a resource?
URBAN SHARKS
Little is known about how sharks have adapted to a highly developed and disturbed urban water system. We’re investigating this in South Florida.
