About MAST Mark Mako
The Story Behind the Name: Encountering a Mako shark in the waters off of Southern Florida is an extremely rare event. Thus, when the students and teachers aboard the November 13th expedition witness the satellite tagging of this majestic creature, they quickly acted to “adopt” this shark. In honor of the MAST Academy lead teacher coordinating with SRC, Mark Tahulka, this large shark was donned the name MAST Mako Mark. MAST Academy has worked closely with SRC, bringing students on board to enhance their marine biology coursework. Not only
has Mark helped to coordinate these trips, but he has also raised a significant amount of money to help support this work, and all the equipment needed. MAST Academy students always arrive with abundant energy and eagerness to learn and participate in our research.
Satellite Tagging:
Mark was carefully tagged with the latest in satellite tag technology providing us with one of the first opportunities to follow the long-term movements of these threatened species. Please keep checking back frequently to follow Mark’s movements, which will be updated every few days as Mark’s satellite tag continues to send us real-time tracking data.
Adopt-a-Shark: For information on how you can contribute to our shark conservation research by adopting and tracking your own shark, please visit our Adopt a Shark page.
